From hidden izakayas to generations-old food shops and historic temples with taiko drum and fire ceremonies, Monzen-Nakacho has everything you could dream of in a Tokyo neighborhood – and more. On this afternoon into evening tour, we’ll explore this magical slice of old-school Tokyo, where the city’s ancient spirit and modern-day creativity live deliciously side-by-side.

ABOUT

We’ll go ahead and say it: There’s no other neighborhood in Tokyo quite like Monzen-Nakacho. In a city filled with endlessly explorable districts and backstreets, this neighborhood stands apart for its intoxicating mix, a place where Tokyo’s past, present and future can all be experienced – and tasted – oftentimes on the same street.

Part of Tokyo’s shitamachi, the city’s historic old town, which dates back to the 17th century Edo period, Monzen-Nakacho still maintains a laid back and old-school atmosphere that recalls earlier times. Walk along the neighborhood’s cobblestoned streets and you’ll find yourself at the striking Fukugawa Fudo-do Temple, founded in 1703 and where daily fire ceremonies for good fortune still take place five times a day. Continue walking through colorful Monzen-Nakacho and you will come across shop after little shop – the pickle maker, the crafter of bespoke fishing rods – that in many cases have been in business for decades. And as day turns into night, the neighborhood comes even more to life, with locals filling up hole-in-the-wall bars and izakayas run by characters who are as unique as the neighborhood itself.

On this six-hour food tour, we will go deep into Monzen-Nakacho’s backstreets, stopping into tiny storefronts and then out-of-the-way izakayas and bars to meet the artisans who keep the neighborhood’s bellies – and glasses – full and taste culinary delights unique to the neighborhood from traditional fishermen’s food to innovative modern cuisine. More than an izakaya crawl, on this walk we’ll also plunge into the spiritual side of sake drinking and the place it holds in Japanese culture and religion, tasting some very special renditions of Japan’s traditional spirit.

We’ll start our day off with a visit to one of the neighborhood’s classic spots for fukagawa meshi, a local specialty made of clams served over rice. As we head towards the Fudodo Temple to catch one of the daily fire ceremonies, we’ll make a detour to visit a bustling shopping street that dates back to the early 20th century, where we’ll pop into several old-time food shops and have a taste of a variety of artisanal specialties, including pickles and several traditional sweets.

After paying our respects at the temple and taking in the multisensory ceremony there, we’ll do as the locals do and start heading to the neighborhood’s watering holes, where the drinks are accompanied by expertly crafted bites. As the afternoon turns into evening, we’ll visit a sake specialist, stop by an oyster shucker who’s doing his part to help fisherman recover from the lingering effects of the devastating 2011 tsunami by buying his bivalves directly from them and then squeeze our way into a hidden tachinomi, or “standing bar,” where the small kitchen miraculously turns out edible wonders. Before we finish our eating and drinking together, we will visit another revered local shrine – Tomioka Hachiman, the birthplace of Edo-era professional sumo and, with its lit up grounds, a must-see for any nocturnal adventure in the neighborhood. To cap off our night, we’ll hit several more spots where we’ll rub elbows with the locals, have a few more exquisite sips and bites, and get an even deeper understanding of what makes Monzen-Nakacho the magical place that it is.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is included in the fee? In addition to your Culinary Backstreets guide, all food consumed on the walk – almost a dozen different edible specialties – are included in the price.
Why is the Culinary Backstreets tour more expensive than some other walking tours? Our approach is different than most tour companies. Each of our culinary walks is the outcome of considerable research. We work with academics in the field and our own team of experienced professionals – both guides and local journalists. Our ongoing publishing of articles, from restaurant reviews to features about the intersection of food and culture, constantly feeds new material into the culinary walks, so they evolve and constantly improve. Though costly, we believe that this is how to create the quality experiences we strive for. We practice honest tourism and would never accept a free lunch or any sort of commission. On the contrary, we are proud to know that the money spent during the culinary walk goes to support businesses that we believe in, helping to preserve the social and cultural fabric of the cities we love so dearly.
How does the payment process work? Once you have made a reservation, we require the full fee to be paid in order to complete the online booking. Our online booking system uses Stripe to process secure payments.

Can you pick me up from my hotel? How will I return, once the tour is over? Our tour prices don’t include transportation. If you book a tour, you’re responsible for arriving to the pre-arranged meeting spot on your own. Once the tour is over, we will help you get an authorized, safe taxi to your hotel, or provide directions on public transportation, if you’re interested in that.
How much food will I get to try? This is really up to you. We generally make between 9 and 12 eating stops on our walk and try to include some breaks from eating along the way. The price includes as much food as you’re open to trying. We offer a suggested portion size at each stop and you can take our recommendation if you’d like. Our walks often involve street food and sharing food.
