When Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan declared in 2013 that Turkey’s national drink was not rakı – the anise-flavored spirit that is the essential liquid anchor to any night of mezes and conversation at a meyhane – but rather ayran, the salty, yogurt-based (non-alcoholic) beverage, we found ourselves in a quandary. Yes, like many others, we enjoy the occasional ayran, but who wants to be told by political leaders what they should drink? In response, we came up with the “I ❤ Ayran” t-shirt. A declaration of truth? A sly political dig? Depending on your mood, location and time of day, this shirt can be both!
