Open from early morning until 2 a.m. Monday through Saturday, it’s a reliable stop for an early breakfast, a late-night snack or anything in between. The menu is short and traditional, but the lomito, a tenderloin steak sandwich, is particularly worth it. A beer arrives, in classic porteño fashion, with a trio of peanuts, potato chips and salty snack sticks. It’s also one of the great places in the neighborhood to watch big football matches.</span></p>

The room itself is barely 30 square meters, with an open kitchen and bar that make conversation with Pablo part of the experience, alongside simple plates of cheese, charcuterie, and other dishes.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">A short detour from Scalabrini Ortiz onto Honduras leads to Mamuschka, the Bariloche chocolate institution founded in 1989 and still run by the same family. The company makes all its chocolate bean-to-bar, sourcing cacao directly from farms in Latin America and processing it at its factory in Bariloche. The Palermo shop is built for browsing: there are ready-made boxes as well as selections assembled to order from the long glass counter, where bonbons, chocolate bars, chocolate-covered nuts and fruit are laid out in rows. Among the classics are the timbal, thin layers of chocolate and dulce de leche, and the dulce de leche-filled ositos, little chocolate bears sold in the brand’s distinctive tins that often get kept long after the chocolates are gone. </span></p>

All are cooked to order in a blazing clay oven, but the standout is the Arab-style empanada, based on a recipe Emilia used to make for family gatherings, along with the salteña de carne, filled with hand-cut beef, finely diced potato and spices. Both pair well with the house yasgua, a tomato-and-chile sauce served in both mild and spicy versions. Seating inside is extremely limited, so most diners eat at simple outdoor tables that fill up on warm nights or take their order to go.</span></p>

Founded in 1930 by Armenian immigrants from Aintab, in present-day Turkey, it remains a family-run reference point for the neighborhood’s Armenian community. Savory staples include lahmayun, the thin flatbread topped with seasoned meat, and suböreg, a layered pastry filled with cheese. Baklava fills out the sweeter side of the display. The shop also sells lavash, hummus, baba ghanoush and other pantry staples, making it as much a neighborhood provisions stop as a bakery.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">Across Avenida Córdoba, in Villa Crespo, a short detour off Scalabrini Ortiz leads to Grasa, which has quickly found a devoted following in a city now teeming with burger joints. Its compact smash burgers are on the smaller side, but that restraint is part of the appeal. Patties use a custom blend from Argentine premium beef producer Muge, and the cheeseburger keeps things classic with cheddar, pickles, mustard, ketchup and onion. A rotating monthly burger gives regulars a reason to come back, with past specials ranging from fried chicken on a pretzel bun to an Oklahoma-style burger and a carbonara-inspired version. The Burger Au Poivre, inspired by steak au poivre, started as a monthly special but proved popular enough to earn a permanent spot on the menu and is the only burger served with fries. The fries topped with Parmesan and truffle oil get plenty of attention, but we prefer the simpler seasoned version. Grasa splits the difference between an American diner and a neighborhood bistro, with table service, ceramic plates, wine glasses and a short list of carefully chosen bottles.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">Sampa has made a name for itself by taking the language of the Argentine parrilla and applying it to vegetables. The vegetarian restaurant cooks over charcoal and quebracho wood, and mushrooms are a particular obsession, with oyster mushrooms, portobellos, and lion’s mane taking the place meat usually occupies on the grill. Beyond the grilled mushrooms, two dishes have become staples of the menu and are especially worth seeking out: the sweet-savory cassava and cheese cake with panela syrup and scallions, and the grilled llanero cheese with chutney, red-pepper jam, and peanuts. The original restaurant was built around a bar that wraps around the open kitchen, putting diners almost inside the action. Sampa has since expanded to include a more traditional dining room, which makes it more comfortable for groups, but when we’re eating solo or as a pair, the bar remains our preferred seat.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">The sign outside Somos Asado promises three things: “fuego, carnes, vinos” — fire, meat, wine. Inside, however, the menu quickly makes clear that this is anything but a straightforward parrilla. Chef Gustavo Portela makes dry-aged beef a house signature, with T-bones and bone-in rib eyes matured for more than 40 days, while the wood-fired clay oven turns out grass-fed asado and long-cooked osobuco. But some of the most interesting dishes come from the edges of traditional parrilla cooking: sweetbreads become dumplings while <em>chinchulines</em>, grilled beef small intestines, are dressed with garlic honey, gochugaru and lemon. The house provoleta is another fixture. The restaurant occupies what was once the shirt factory of co-owner Verónica Krichmar’s grandfather, and the leafy rear patio, framed by old walls and lush plants, is one of the nicest places to sit.</span></p>

Its nikkei menu, a Japanese-Peruvian style of cooking, stands out for something conspicuously absent: salmon. In a city where salmon dominates sushi menus, Neko deliberately avoids it, favoring local fish such as Patagonian trout and fresh catch instead. The restaurant describes it as a way to highlight local produce and avoid imported farmed salmon, which has been criticized for heavy antibiotic use and its environmental impact. The menu ranges from ceviches and tiraditos to rolls, handrolls, and nigiris, though the kitchen is at its best when it resists the temptation to pile on sauces and lets the fish do the talking. A standout is the tiradito trufado, lightly torched trout with truffle oil, flaky salt, and lime zest. The nigiris are another strong bet, especially the trout versions, while the handrolls offer combinations such as trout tartare with ají amarillo and avocado or truffled trout with lime.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">Tintorería Yafuso occupies Fabián Yafuso’s family’s former dry cleaning shop in Villa Crespo, a space tied to the history of his Japanese immigrant family, with reminders of its past still hanging overhead, including old clothes hangers worked into the ceiling decor. At night, just 10 guests sit around the bar for Yafuso’s omakase, a reservation that can come with a waiting list stretching well beyond a year. Lunch, run by Sayuri Sakugawa, is much easier: no reservations, no sushi, and a fixed menu that changes daily, with dishes ranging from bento boxes to katsu, the Japanese-style fried pork cutlet.</span></p>

Instead, expect the kind of generous, home-style cooking that still turns up at old-school Porteño bars and bodegones, from <em>varenikes</em> and cannelloni to <em>pastel de papa</em>, lentil stew, and <em>zapallitos rellenos</em> – round summer squash stuffed with meat, rice, or both.
