The historic Plaka district might be one of Athens’ most popular tourist destinations, but there’s another part of the area that visitors rarely see, one where the city’s ancient heart beats a little louder – particularly through the neighborhood’s food. It’s that culinary aspect of the district which we explore with our food tour in the area – and that you can bring to your own home and kitchen through our “Backstreet Plaka” box and an included virtual video tour.
Mexico City’s size can be daunting, but it also happens to be one of its charms. Rather than simply endless sprawl, the city is made up of what feels like many smaller cities and villages joined together to create an incredibly diverse metropolis. How, then, to put all that size and diversity into one box? The answer is simple: fill it with products from the people who are part of our Mexico City tours and trips and whose work tells the story of their hometown’s many layers. Included is a virtual video “tour” that takes you even deeper into the shops and markets represented in the box.
Where Provence comes crashing into the sea, Marseille is profoundly shaped by its Mediterranean perch. The vibrant port has welcomed goods, immigrants and ideas since 600 B.C., resulting in a rich culinary heritage of French and multicultural flavors. With 2600 years of history, it’s hard to know how to navigate this cosmopolitan city. So, we’ve created the Backstreets Marseille Box. Like our culinary walks, this box is filled with our favorite local treats – now niftily packaged up for you to discover Marseille with your friends and family at home.
Once the center of a global trading Empire that spanned four continents, Lisbon has a long tradition of stocking its pantry with foods from far and wide. In the traditional grocery stores of Lisbon that still keep the neighborhoods fed, this tradition is alive and well. For this box, we’ve gone shopping in the backstreet shops and sourced some of the finest products that Portugal has to offer, bringing the flavors of Lisbon to your kitchen.
The area that encompasses the Queens neighborhoods of Corona, Elmhurst and Jackson Heights – which happens to be the location of our “United Kitchens” food tour – is one of the most diverse places on the face of the planet, home to a multitude of immigrant communities. That diversity is, naturally, best expressed through these neighborhoods’ vibrant food scenes. With our “United Kitchens of Queens” box, that culinary mix can now become part of your own kitchen.
If you’ve joined one of our culinary tours in Naples, then you know well the charms of the Neapolitan kitchen and pantry. Pizza – Naples’ most famous creation – has rightfully gone on to conquer the world and the chances are good that you’ve had a pretty decent pizza margherita delivered to your home in the last few months.
As small, independent restaurants reopen under new rules that limit capacity, they need all of the help they can get. These mom-and-pop operations are essential to neighborhood life and the preservation of culinary traditions. Since we can’t all gather around the table just yet, buy a gift certificate of any amount and we’ll show your support by Saving Your Seat. For every gift certificate purchased, we’ll donate the price of a full meal to the local restaurant we’re featuring this week to offset their losses from working at diminished capacity. Then, when you are ready, you can use the gift certificate (or gift it to a friend to use) on any CB activity, anywhere, without any restrictions.
